Upgrades to items are a method to boost the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost the rarity of an item or mark Level, and also boost other stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specific amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. This is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrading items can be expensive dependent on the upgrader and the type of upgrade you choose to perform. This is due to the fact that many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.

It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It can also be used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can use, since PvP is limited at a lower level. Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

The level of an item will allow players to compare the power of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's an indicator of the damage and quality. Comparing items from the inventory of a seller is possible using the level of the item.

On your PC, you can see the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete item description, including its level. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then entering /itemlevel into chat.

There are several theories about the method by which the level of an item is determined. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula that calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that various perks have different value and that gems in sockets add to the item's overall value. This could result in an item's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.

This is not the only factor that affects the level of an item. The level of the area where the item dropped can also alter its stats. For example it can add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in a variety of ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat mods on weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by the player's level.

Upgrades to an item may increase the stats of an item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. For instance, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, while items with rare tiers can be upgraded many times with higher prices.

Another method of altering the stats of an item is to use affixes. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. The affixes are used to give items extra damage or other special capabilities (such as the ability to revive dead or reduce cooling downs) or to differentiate them by naming them.

Currently, all affixes can be rerolled by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circling arrows. This will cost a specific amount of gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, as with other rerolling methods.

In addition to Rerolling affixes and rerolls, players can also choose which stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However every item will contain at least one stat in the range, unless they are an item that is unique, or an item that has a God Roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to roll the attaches, or select which stats to boost. Similar to the base equipment, this will have to be done per item, and the item comparison interface wouldn't display all possible stats at once.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the likelihood of finding items, the properties spawned on loot drops and the intensity of the properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is especially beneficial in the early game, because players tend to put defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This isn't to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading, which increase with each item level. They can also be enhanced by using anti-materials such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Weapons, armor, and shields can be made or spawn with the Luck property, with the default value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the type of material) for a further +40 luck, or to increase an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, such as the Hollow-infused weapon, can also be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any skill that deals damage by five percent. These items are available in the shop or created with the right ingredients.

item upgrades  are expensive and not all upgrades will succeed. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item if it does not work.

When you upgrade an item, the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased so much, and the likelihood that the upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..

The Luck of an item can also affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has an overall success rate of 25 percent and each item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5percent.

The upgrade overlays for items are rendered above items in the inventory. This could obscure enchantment effects and other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
