The ability to upgrade items allows players to enhance their weapons and gear with new affixes, boosting its base stats or giving additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, will add their name to the end of the name of the item they are connected to, for example adding an Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would transform it into a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.

If the player upgrades their gathering tool, and then replaces glyphs with another glyph the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, except for inscriptions, which can be freely swapped.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from the previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks and items can be upgraded a specific number of times before being "leveled out."
